Finding the balance

It’s hard for me to believe it’s been 5 months since I left Haiti on that Spirit flight which would prove to be the last for almost three months. When the airlines started flying again on May 30, I believed I would be in Haiti on May 31. However, Vorb and Steeve did not feel comfortable with me coming and I canceled that trip, knowing I had a very full summer of personal obligations and would not be able to schedule a Haiti trip until at least the fall.

Watching our programs come back to life from a distance has been a difficult experience indeed, as I have always taken such great pleasure in being in proximity to our friends there on the ground. I have to say, though, my pride in watching everyone learn and grow in my absence is also very strong. Day-by-day I see our mission statement on full display: “Empowering Haitian believers to reach their own country for Christ.”

I would be easy to look at the photos and videos Hudson posts each day and believe that everything is okay now, but that is not the case. In fact, these continue to be very difficult days in Haiti, and we are watching as other ministries are struggling through the same problems we faced back in the spring - the threat of gangs completely consuming their communities.

After consultation with senior staff, I am sharing this news story, something we do not do often. We were struck by the accuracy of the piece, however, and believe it to be helpful in educating our friends and partners on how life continues to be in Haiti. We hope you will read the news article and watch the video from CNN.

Please continue to pray with us for better days - not just at Haiti Awake - but for the entire nation. When one part of the country is hurting, the entire nation is hurting, as well.

And, in case you missed it, Vorb did an excellent job in a recent interview for The World and Everything in It. Vorb’s interview starts about 17 minutes into the podcast.
