I Am A Child Of God

I met a little girl in the summer of 2014. She was so small. She was so thin. She was so hungry.

I had given all of the children who lived in the run-down, dirty orphanage a small snack cake. And I remember her because she ate the snack cake, then she licked the wrapper. Over and over and over. There was nothing left on the wrapper, but she continued to lick it.

That’s how hungry she was.

I remember that same little girl the next spring - how each time I saw her she just wanted me to hold her and carry her on my hip like a baby. Only she wasn’t a baby. She was 9 years old.

That’s how much she needed love.

And I’ve watched God write that little girl’s story over the last 5 years. And I’ve watched her grow - physically, spiritually, socially, emotionally, cognitively. I’ve watched our staff and our teams and her sponsors love her well and give her a sense of belonging, security, and stability.

That’s how good our Father is.

And so today, I am so happy to share that the staff and children of Haiti Awake voted Phebe the Person of the Month for Haiti Awake - the first child to receive this honor.

Here are some things others said about Phebe:

She is always available to help people.
She helps a lot in the house, and she is so obedient.
Even though Phebe is shy, she contributes a lot in keeping the house clean and has a sense to make people laugh.
She is a good girl.

From my mother’s womb
You have chosen me
Love has called my name
I’ve been born again, into a family
Your blood flows through my veins
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
