Akoz grann pwa, ti wòch goute grès

This proverb could be literally translated as: “Because of bean, little rock tastes oil.”

Haitian people use beans a lot in their daily meal.
Beans are  one of the main ingredients in a  Haitian’s daily meal. Almost every day, Haitian people eat beans in Haiti. In  the process of cooking, the bean is put in water and oil so that it could be underdone or well done depending on the meal that is going to be prepared: “sòs pwa” (bean sauce) or mixed with rice, corn meal, wheat, or millet.

Sometimes, while we are sorting the bean we have bought in the market, a little rock could be missed and put in the pot to be cooked like the  beans. So these lucky rocks will have the privilege to meet the oil that is in the pot.

Haitians say this proverb when someone that has his/her chance on something that was not prepared for him/her but fortunately they become  part of it. They also say that when somebody is blessed or has an opportunity because of somebody else.  Sometimes, the blessing of some people is so huge that it covers other people that are not even their friends or family.
