When we trust people to get the job done, we get leaders
When Haiti Awake started in October of 2014, leadership consisted of me and Steeve. Looking back, I’ve often said we were thrown into the deep end of the pool and just started swimming. And for several months the responsibility of leadership rested solely on us.
Then God sent Polo in the summer of 2015. He came on as short-term, part-time help, but on his 2nd day of work, Polo showed leadership - taking responsibility for a mistake that involved several people and stepping up to counsel the rest of the staff on better performance for the future. And within two weeks of that 1st day, we had offered Polo a permanent position with Haiti Awake - knowing it would transition into a leadership position.
Since that time Steeve has been acting as ground director and director of church ministry development. Polo has overseen both economic development and community development. Truly, for almost four years Polo has been doing the work of two men - and doing it well. But as we have continued to grow, we’ve known that at some point we would need to hire someone else who could be in a leadership position.
Last summer Polo’s brother, Vorb joined our staff - to help fill a summer gap..
And just like Polo, it was immediately evident that Vorb possessed the depth of character, education, and leadership skills we needed for a director position. Over the last several months, doors opened that have allowed Vorb to take a full-time position with Haiti Awake.
Yesterday, May 1, Vorb officially joined our team of leaders in Haiti, and now Haiti Awake has three directors.
Simon Sinek has said, “When we tell people to do their job, we get workers. When we trust people to get the job done, we get leaders.”
We have three amazing leaders at Haiti Awake who will get the job done day-by-day. With the addition of Vorb to our staff, my role is transitioning, as well, and I could not be any more thrilled to be handing off many responsibilities to this team of men who know their country and their people far better than I ever will.
Tout glwa pou Bondye toutan.
