Se mèt kò ki veye kò

Literal English translation of this proverb is " It is the owner of the body who looks after the body.”

Haitian people are constantly facing a variety of dangers andr threats in their daily lives. If they are not cautious for a moment, they could be a victim, contracting a disease or even dying.

Haitians value their lives - just like all people.. They like to take care of their bodies - to keep thenselves safe, clean,, fed, clothed, free from harm. For example, we say that we cannot buy a leg in the market to show the necessity to take good care of our legs.

In fact, Haitians say this proverb to remind people who are not as careful as they should be that they have responsibilities over their own care. They also say it when others are guessing or questioning their actions or decisions for safety.

Sometimes, authorities launch the warning and precautions to take against a threat or danger.

This reminds me of our current situation with COVID-19.

You might also know or sense a threat or danger. And even though others do not care and act as if they will not do anything for that, it is your responsibility to make due decisions to protect your physical, mental or spiritual integrity.

Remember, it is our responsibility to take care of ourselves because " Se mèt kò ki veye kò.”
